Yet, sifting through the recitation of inspirations and the sweep of personal history, one simple question always rises to the top: Would you want any of this? That’s likely to get a resounding yes. It’s not just that Zankov’s knitwear feels accomplished and desirable. It also speaks to the moment we currently find ourselves in, when we’re all feeling kind of jaded from the (still, even now) onslaught of fashion as stuff. It’s the combination of so many qualities of knitwear generally, and his knitwear specifically, which feels right for the moment: that particular brew of comfort, craft, tradition, heritage and—one would hope—sustainability. Zankov’s got that last aspect covered. Those hand knits of his for instance—done, appropriately enough, in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn—are knitted up from natural un-dyed beige and black yarns from heritage flocks managed by a female led collective in France, while the merino is sourced in cruelty free farms in South America. There’s a real sense of making with care here. Which leads us to that thing which all sweater addicts have on their mind: Keeping with care; how to look after your knit the best and most environmentally friendly way possible. “I would just turn it inside out and hang it by a window,” Zankov said. “Air it out. Because with knitwear you don’t really need to clean it that often.” Good to know.

You could dot all of this on a map stretching from Zankov’s native Russia, where he was born in St. Petersburg, before moving to the United States aged 10. Early 20th century Constructivist artist Varvara Stepanova was a point of reference for fall, her cultural output including textiles and costume design—Zankov, a fan, saw a show of her work in Paris last year—as was photographer Sergey Chilikov. He captured the humdrum existence of Communist era Russians, depicting the Soviet austerity interiors of their homes; one shot of women gathered in a kitchen, its drab gray splashed with bright green, was particularly inspiring to Zankov. The dirtied up pastels, meanwhile, are a newer pin drop on the map: The six months he recently spent in Milan because his partner was on sabbatical there, during which he fixated on the way Italy can make a pastel look anything but sweet.

The stripped-back space was a smart move. What better environment to highlight Zankov’s geometric patterns, cubistic formations rendered in merino jacquard or a mohair/alpaca mix, and hand knit pieces whose orderly striations of stitches fall into zig zag formations. “I’ve always been drawn so much to graphic patterns, especially the Russian constructivist aesthetic, and the Russian avant garde art movement,” he said. The raw white space was also the perfect foil for his color palette, which veered from deep purple, emerald green and cornflower blue, to what Zankov called “dirtier” pastels, like a pink which had been denatured of any prettiness and looked all the better for it. He then combined it with charcoal gray into a checkered sweater, the knit’s fluffiness appealingly at odds with its slightly punk-ish ’70s/’80s vibe.
