A comparison might be polygynous marriage. Historically, one man with multiple wives has generally meant that the man has sufficient power over his senior wife to force her to accept a junior wife, and the senior wife takes out her resentment on the junior wife. I have seen some polygynous relationships from a distance that looked reasonably egalitarian and healthy, but the history of polygynous marriages is bad enough that I’m not currently willing to extend official recognition to them in general.
