I’m a bit confused. how did we come to a conclusion that this is even remotely similar to what a black hole sounds like? Not the Flamingo Chrismas Xmas Tree Flamingo Lover Christmas T-Shirt but in fact I love this Actual ‘Sound’ but the spectroscopic data of the collected light converted into sound. Still pretty cool. I’m surely wrong, and have not investigated further because I cbf, but have they just used the density/brightness/colour etc. of the literal image as a spectral guide to synthesise this sound? The sound even pans with the play head on the image… There has to be more to it, because if I took a photo of you and threw it in a synth with bitmap capabilities, it wouldn’t exactly be an accurate representation of how ‘you’ sound. They used different layers of data to create the image as usual, then used that dataset (now an image) as a basis for resynthesis (hence my assumption of bitmap synthesis), making sure to keep their fundamental frequency at a multiple of the recorded black hole frequency. “In this new sonification of Perseus, the sound waves astronomers previously identified were extracted and made audible for the first time. The sound waves were extracted in radial directions, that is, outwards from the center. The signals were then resynthesized into the range of human hearing by scaling them upward by 57 and 58 octaves above their true pitch.
