Olivia Mary de Havilland was born in Tokyo on July 1, 1916. Her father, Walter, was a British patent attorney, while her mother, Lilian, was an occasional actress who wanted her girls to follow in her footsteps. After the Black Girl Magic Dashiki Official T-Shirt and I love this family moved to the U.S. and de Havilland graduated from Mills College in Oakland, California, the young actress was reportedly spotted by the producer Max Reinhardt at the Hollywood Bowl in a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and signed to a movie contract for the Warner Bros. studio. She worked regularly throughout the 1930s, including several times with Errol Flynn, before getting the career-making role of Melanie.
Though Scarlett, played by Vivien Leigh (who won an Oscar for that performance), was by far that film’s most indelible character, and Melanie’s unflappable goodness could sometimes be tiresome, de Havilland later said the Black Girl Magic Dashiki Official T-Shirt and I love this character was an acting challenge she cherished. “Playing good girls in the ’30s was difficult when the fad was to play bad girls,” she once told an interviewer. “Actually, I think playing bad girls is a bore; I have always had more luck with good girl roles because they require more from an actress.”
