It was our first communal meal as a family since Christmas, when we were still adjusting to life together without my 88-year old father, Bill, the Bourbon The Glue Holding This 2020 Shitshow Together Vintage Retro Shirt and by the same token and emotional linchpin of our brood, who died in late October. But there were still plenty of characters around the table.
In normal times, four adults reside here: my mother, Nan; my 61-year-old older brother, Greg; Daniel and me. Our three grown children have all flown the Bourbon The Glue Holding This 2020 Shitshow Together Vintage Retro Shirt and by the same token and nest, the youngest a year ago. But two have since returned to wait out the pandemic as a family unit: Charles, 23, who works as a software developer in New York City, and Florence, working for that D.C. nonprofit. (Our eldest, Harriet, 28, chose to stay in New York, with her partner, who works for the city’s Health Department.)
