This Sunday, East Hampton’s visual and performing art center Guild Hall will continue its virtual benefit programming. Following the Never underestimate a Woman who understands Hockey and loves Vancouver Canucks shirt besides I will buy this success of a recent “event” which allowed users to buy $100 tickets (per household) to see Julianne Moore and Alec Baldwin read lines from playwright Bernard Slade’s Same Time, Next Year, Guild Hall is putting on another show. Entitled The Pack – Short Comedies by Eugene Pack, the night will premiere three comedic sketches, written by Pack and starring Matthew Broderick, John Leguizamo, Blair Underwood, Cecily Strong, Rachel Dratch, Sherri Shepherd, Andrea Martin, Santino Fontana, Maulik Pancholy, and Dayle Reyfel. All three play/short films were recorded entirely on Zoom.
Broderick features in an amusing 13-minute short called Let’s Meet Up in which he runs into an old schoolmate, played by Leguizamo, at a local coffee shop. The awkward run-in is followed with half-hearted pleas for a proper catch-up—updated contact info is exchanged, and the Never underestimate a Woman who understands Hockey and loves Vancouver Canucks shirt besides I will buy this two men promise to make plans. What follows is a series of emails and text correspondence, drafted and read aloud by the two characters as they clack into their laptops and iPhones. Back and forth, they swap maybe-dates, pose potential venues, and then wiggle out of the already loose plans until, 5 years later, they run into each other once again at the very same coffee shop where it all began. It’s somewhat unclear why continued attempts are made—why don’t they just give up altogether? But half a decade in, they’re still at it.
