It really upset me that they had not telephone me beforehand to let me know. The position was filled or to ask me what I was interested in the other position. It was a classic case of bait and switch, and that’s not only unethical but highly unprofessional! I wasn’t having it. so since I knew that my chances of getting the job were slim to none, I was very candid with the the woman. I looked at her and said “Did you actually read my resume? Did you notice where I did my internship? If so then you would have knows I have a degree in this field.” The interviewer got a little snippy and said ‘Your degree means nothing to us. If you want to work here, you’re going to have to start at the bottom like everyone else!”
I felt so belittled, humiliated and embarrassed. I Rose to my feet, and try to hide the fact that tears are forming in my eyes, and I said ‘Look, I am 35 years old, and I’ve been in the workforce 1979. I’ve never been fired or laid off. I work my tail off to earn my two BA degrees while raising a child alone. When do I finally get off the bottom? As far as I’m concerned this interview is finished!” And then I walked out before she could see me cry. I held it in until I got to my car. I drove a few blocks pulled over to the side on a residential road and just sobbed.
